Spirited fun - 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier coupe/sedan
When it comes to identifying a product that typifies Chevrolet's value message, the Cavalier coupe/sedan continues to rank as a perennial favorite with consumers. Built by General Motors at its sprawling Lordstown, Ohio, manufacturing complex, the front-drive Chevrolet has enjoyed a long history under the sign of the bow tie.
Launched in 1982, the Cavalier has been the beneficiary of numerous upgrades and improvements over the years. A complete redesign of the line in 1995 made the subcompact Chevrolet a strong contender in the small car segment. The Cavalier lineup was freshened for the 2000 model year with many exterior, interior and electrical enhancements.
Available in two-door coupe and four-door sedan body styles, the model lineup has been changed for 2002. LS Sport joins Base and LS trim levels for coupe and sedan. Additionally, the first-ever Cavalier Z24 sedan will join the Z24 coupe in the model lineup this year -- but just for a limited time.
LS Sport models include an all-new EcoTec 2.2-liter aluminum L4 engine. This model is designed to offer looks and performance in a fun-to-drive package for the youth enthusiast that appreciates the drive of a sporty vehicle. According to Mary Wernette, Chevrolet Cavalier brand manager, "Chevrolet wants to reach more young, first-time new vehicle buyers so we have made some impressive additions to Cavalier's list of standard equipment."
In addition to the new prime mover, the LS Sport is equipped with the following equipment: ground effects (front fascia extension with fog lamps, rear fascia extension and rocker moldings), chrome aluminum wheels, specific body-color door handles, body-color exterior mirror housings for power mirrors, leather wrapped transmission shift knob and high profile rear spoiler.
The base engine is the (LN2) 2200 L4, while the Z24 coupe and sedan receive the (LD9) 2.4-liter cast-iron twin cam. Two five-speed transmissions, M86/M94, serve as the gearboxes, while the 4T45-E four-speed automatic with overdrive and traction control is a $780 option.
On the road, the new EcoTec engine turns in a strong and willing performance. Handling and control are safe and secure.
Suspension hardware consists of the tried-and-true MacPherson struts with coil springs in the front and trailing tubular control arms with twist-beam, semi-independent axle for the rear. LS Sport and Z24 models are equipped with a Level II Sport suspension that includes shaped inner-metal bushing on front lower control arms, high-rate front and rear springs and a large 22-mm stabilizer bar.
The rear suspension receives an 18-mm stabilizer bar for added control during aggressive driving.
In the cabin, revised instrumentation, displays, and controls greet the driver. Good outward visibility coupled with good interior lighting make this car a safe haven. Also inside are plenty of cupholders, nooks and crannies for storing much personal "stuff."
A new line of radios with high sensitivity to pull in weak or remote radio stations is standard across the line. Air conditioning is standard in every Cavalier model. Comfortable rear seats are combined with good leg room; a single piece fold-down rear seat back adds to the small cargo area. Floor mats front and rear round out the value.
Ratings & specifications
Engine performance ratings are 2.2L four cylinder (LN2) -- 115 hp at 5,000 rpm and 135 lbs-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm; 2.2L EcoTek four-cylinder (L61) -- 140 hp at 5,600 rpm and 150 lbs-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm; 2.4L Twin Cam four-cylinder (LD9) -- 150 hp at 5,600 rpm and 155 lbs-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. EPA fuel economy numbers range from 22 city/33 highway for the 2.2L/five-speed manual driveline to 21 city/28 highway for the high-output 2.4L Twin Cam/four-speed automatic. All three engines use regular unleaded gasoline. Underhood fluids are easily accessible and clearly marked.
Standard safety/security equipment includes dual front airbags; four-wheel anti-lock brakes; battery rundown protection; daytime running lights and Passlock theft deterrent system. Models equipped with automatic transmission add traction control. LS adds remote keyless entry, alarm system and power door locks. LS Sport adds fog lamps
The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier starts from $13,860 for the base coupe up to $16,580 for the Z24 sedan. Destination charge adds $540. General Motors sold over 233,000 Cavaliers during the 2001 calendar year, so finding one will not be a problem.
