The largest city in Maryland, Baltimore has carved a distinct identity for itself as part of the massive Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The rich historical legacy of "Charm City" includes nearby Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key’s inspiration for the Star Spangled Banner, and serving as the home of such literary superstars as Edgar Allen Poe and H.L. "BWI" is how most locals refer to the city’s main airport given its lengthy official name: Baltimore–Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
