BMW introduced American motorists to the most impressive variant of the performance-oriented M3 franchise for 2008 -- the all-new fourth generation M3 convertible. Back in the M3 family after a brief hiatus -- (the last M3 convertible was available from the 2001-2006), the rear-drive retractable hardtop is equipped with the same 4.0L V8 that is now standard across the entire M3 line-up -- the first V8 prime mover in a series-production BMW M3.

This engine is joined to a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox with a Variable M Differential Lock that generates up to 100 percent locking action with fully variable action whenever required -- ensuring optimum traction on all road surfaces.

In addition to the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the new M3 convertible premiers a new seven-speed double clutch transmission specially designed for a high-rpm engine. The M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic (M DCT Drivelogic) shifts gears without the slightest interruption on the flow of power. As a result, M DCT Drivelogic is able to extract the most performance possible from the car, while also providing a smooth comfortable shift from one gear to the next.

The Drivelogic control offers 11 different shift programs -- five for automatic operation, six for manual operation. Manual operation can be performed via a new sports shift lever exclusive to the BMW M3 or via paddles on the steering wheel (pulling the right-hand paddle to shift up, the left paddle to shift down).

On the road, the new M3 convertible is an absolute joy to drive. The torque curve is wonderful -- always a stream of fluid, useable power available -- often without the need to downshift the standard manual gearbox. The M3 convertible rides on a chassis that the automaker claims is "faster than the engine". BMW engineers developed a new, aluminum chassis specifically for this model. The design begins with placing components in such a way as to create a 50/50 front/rear weight balance. Virtually all of the front-end components are aluminum, including the front struts, swivel bearings, central subframe and an additional thrust panel below the engine serving to maximize lateral stiffness of the entire front section.

From the rear axle subframe through the transverse arms and track arms, to the wheel mounts which were reconfigured in their kinematics and stiffness, to the mounting points for the longitudinal arms and the aluminum dampers, almost every detail on the five-arm rear axle is made of aluminum and is new for this model.

Inside the M3 cabin is an environment designed for performance driving without compromising the comfort of driver and passengers. Seating is comfortable and very supportive in all positions for "spirited driving", while the newly designed center console discreetly ‘swings" toward the driver. Displays, controls and switchgear are classic BMW in presentation and layout.

In the midst of technological advancements and enhancements that are standard in the M3 convertible, one is worthy of special note: MDrive, a part of the optional Technology Package. As a steering wheel mounted button, MDrive allows the driver to program a variety of specific performance and handling settings.
