Family harmony - 2005 Saturn Relay CSV

The family car grows up. Separating kid-friendly vehicles from family-friendly ones, Saturn introduces the new 2005 Relay Cross Sport Van (CSV). As proof that form and function can attractively co-exist, the Relay is the first Saturn to seat seven people combining SUV-like styling with the functionality of a mid-van.

Offered in three trim levels, the Relay is built at General Motors' Doraville, Ga., assembly complex. Available in front drive or Versatrak all-wheel drive configurations, the Relay is powered by a 3.5L V-6 joined to an electronically-controlled four-speed automatic transmission.

Providing the safety, functionality and convenience that mid-van customers need and appreciate, the Relay offers passenger and cargo carrying flexibility, first-rate safety features, fuel economy, low step in height and above average ride and handling.

On the road, the Relay delivers sport sedan-like handling and performance. The added running gear of the optional all-wheel drive system does not negatively impact the responsiveness of the powertrain.

The Saturn Relay starts with a robust unibody design with ladder-frame underbody construction. The independent front suspension features MacPherson struts, coil springs, L-shaped stamped lower control arms and aluminum knuckles; an open-section twist axle with integral stabilizer bar and trailing arms with hydraulic bushings secure the rear. AWD equipped models feature a double-wishbone cast aluminum rear suspension with short- and long-arm control arms and cast aluminum cradle.

Inside the cabin, a low step in height facilitates entry and exit. A European Modern design interior reflects the automaker's intensified attention to detail and craftsmanship. Seven- passenger seating is standard, with individual captain's chairs in both the first and second rows. The second and third-row seats are both foldable and removable for additional cargo room, while the third-row seat has a 50/50 split.

Other notable features include a front overhead console and standard overhead rail system, with snap-in accessory and storage modules for a less cluttered interior. The overhead lighting system is neatly integrated and is designed to accommodate the standard rear climate and audio controls or the rear-seat entertainment system/DVD into a single unit.

The rear cargo area features an innovative compartment system that contains four storage compartments appropriately sized to hold items such as milk and orange juice containers, 12-packs of soda and grocery bags. The forward edge of the dividers is cut out to create a long, left-to-right compartment, capable of storing longer objects, such as an umbrella.
